Local First Arizona Foundation Offers New Way To Build Opportunity in Arizona

In a state where most of its residents have come from somewhere else, the Local First Arizona Foundation (LFAF) has the goal of inspiring Arizonans to be proud of and invest in their home state. They are doing this through the Localist program, where individuals can sign up to be Localists and receive exclusive benefits that connect them with their local communities all while investing in LFAF programs that are building opportunity in Arizona.

“Many folks may be familiar with Local First Arizona through our work to strengthen local communities through encouraging people to think local, buy local, and be local. But through the Local First Arizona Foundation, we’re working hard throughout Arizona to change systems and build stronger economies that are inclusive to everyone through key programs that build prosperity for individuals and families from the ground up,” said Kimber Lanning, Founder and Executive Director of Local First Arizona and the Local First Arizona Foundation.

A New Way of Thinking About Economic Development

LFAF focuses on a wide range of strategic initiatives that target systems of inequity. These initiatives include powering Arizona’s entrepreneurs through the Fuerza Local Business Accelerator Program; celebrating Arizona’s homegrown foods through the Healthy Local Foods Initiatives, and strengthening Arizona’s small-town economies through the Arizona Rural Development Council and other rural programming.

“Our work at the Local First Arizona Foundation turns traditional economic development on its head,” said Lanning. “All of our programs and events focus on building opportunity and prosperity from the ground up. We’re working with micro-entrepreneurs of diverse backgrounds to help them build job opportunities within their communities; we’re working with farmers and food producers and connecting them with resources to expand their business operations and localize food systems; and we’re working with rural leaders and stakeholders to create smart community development opportunities and initiatives that keep wealth and jobs in small-town Arizona.”
