Join Local First Arizona Foundation on our Upcoming WeekendZona Excursion!
WeekendZona aims to redirect the billions of dollars (6 billion in Southern California, alone!) that Arizonans spend vacationing out of state in our unique and diverse small towns. By creating a curated experience to showcase each small town in its best light, we expose Arizonans to hidden gems and create a measurable economic impact in these communities.
Have you ever explored Southern Arizona's Cochise County?
It is home to beautiful national monuments such as the Chiricahuas, delicious local wineries, and right before you get down to Mexico, the rural town of Douglas. Douglas was established in 1776 as a smelter town for the mining production in Bisbee. The town now holds years of history such as the Gadsden Hotel, Four Church Square (featured in the Guinness Book of World Records), the Border Air Museum (where Eleanor Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart opened the first international airport in the U.S.), and tons of culture you will need to experience for yourself and we're here to help you do that.
Discover Douglas - An Arts, Culture, & Heritage Getaway
Art and culture: The charming border-town of Douglas has adapted an artistic spirit that matches the cultural influences around them. Experience the creativity of the Southwest in Douglas and leave with new inspiration for your artistic endeavors.
Heritage: The deep history and heritage of Douglas are seen all throughout the town. You will get a first-hand experience of this through the grand staircase at the Gadsden Hotel where Pancho Villa and his horse Siete Leguas left a chip on the grand staircase. Continuing on with our tour of the historic district and getting to peek into the secret tunnels of El Chapo.

Join us for a weekend getaway to Douglas!
The town of Douglas is a small, charming border community about 2 hours south of Tucson. With a population of 15,000, Douglas was recently dubbed one of the nation’s best “micropolitan” areas with a growing economy and wonderful amenities. Douglas’ history dates back to the 1500’s when Cabeza de Vaca established a route from Mexico. The town is full of history and offers a wealth of attractions for birders, hikers, and shoppers. Streets are lined with historic buildings including the Gadsden Hotel and the Grand Theatre. There are multiple hiking trails and outdoor experiences, and explore some of the cultures at Church Square which was in Ripley’s Believe It or Not as the only city block in the world with a different church on each corner.
